THE GREATEST RACE ON EARTH

After five fantastic years...

Standard Chartered has decided to cease our sponsorship of The Greatest Race on Earth. Five years has seen the series go from strength to strength, bringing a unique element of teamwork to marathon running, engaging elite runners and Standard Chartered staff members in the only marathon relay series of its type in the world. The Greatest Race on Earth has been a fantastic success, and we are proud of the way in which it has transformed the sport of marathon running. However, we feel that the time is right to review our objectives and the options. We remain committed to our marathon sponsorships in key markets, and will continue to look for opportunities to engage the communities in the markets in which we operate.

Many thanks to all our dedicated runners and followers for all the support over the years.

BEKELE WON 4TH 10,000M WORLD C'SHIP WITH NEW C'SHIP RECORD 26:46.31

Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia celebrates winning the gold medal in the men's 10,000m final for the fourth time with a Championship Record Berlin, Germany - So it took a very strong Kenenisa Bekele to restore Ethiopia’s long distance pride in Berlin at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, on Monday night (17).Two days after the country’s shock defeat by Kenya’s Linet Masai in the women’s 10,000 metres it was the double Olympic Champion and world record holder, who took the gold medal in the men’s 25 lap race. “I am very happy to have won this one for Ethiopia. It is not easy if you run for your country in a major championship,” said Bekele who counting team results at cross country has won 23 senior global gold medals in his career.4 in the bag, ambition to surpass HaileAnd as so often when Bekele takes a major race, there was something special to come with it. We are not talking about a World record in a championship race, though with his great time of 26:46.31 minutes the 27 year-old improved his own championship’s record from Paris 2003 (26:49.57).But it was the great Haile Gebrselassie, with whom Kenenisa Bekele is now on the same level regarding the number or World Championship wins in the 10,000m. While Gebrselassie took each of the golds in 1993, 1995, 1997 and 1999 Bekele now also has four in a row: Paris 2003, Helsinki 2005, Osaka 2007 and Berlin 2009.So in two year’s time, when the World Championships will take place in Daegu (Korea), Bekele could even surpass Haile Gebrselassie with a fifth winExcerpt from berlin.iaaf.orgBekele is also a World Record Holder of 5000m in 12:37.35 since 2004 AND10,000m in 26:17.53 since 2005

ADIDAS KING OF THE ROAD - 02.08.2009

Unlike last year, the Adidas King of the Road 2009 was held at the Stadium Shah Alam but it is also good because of the ample parking places there. A total of about 8,500 runners took part. Overall the race is quite well organised, water and traffic control okay but we did not see any distance markers. The routes were tough, with many uphills and roundabouts but these are the numerous challenges all runners have to face. Big cheer to the Menteri Besar who was very punctual. He flagged off the race on the dot at 6.30am without any dilly dally.
